Frequently Asked Questions


• Can I hire a scooter or powered chair on a long term basis?
     Unfortunately, no. Scooters and powered chairs are both too heavy and expensive to hire beyond the daily basis. However you may hire manual wheelchairs on a long term basis.

• How long can I hire manual wheelchairs for?
     You can hire the wheelchair for 60 days initially, after which they must be returned for inspection. Hire beyond 60 days must be referred to the Management Committee for approval.

• Can I take wheelchairs abroad?
     We regret that we do not allow wheelchairs to be taken abroad due to damage being caused by handling at airports.

• Do you provide an advice and information service?
     We don't officially provide advice and information, but we do hold a range of information and we will be happy to point you in the right direction.

• Do you sell mobility aids?
     No, but we can refer you to people who do stock various products.

• If I arrive by Bus or Metro can someone bring the vehicle to me?
     Yes, provided you are arriving in South Shields town centre. It would be helpful if you are able to give us some notice.

• Can someone accompany me while I am using the scooter?
     Yes, we have volunteers who can accompany you whilst using the scooter, subject to availability. Advance notice is required.

• What happens if I damage the scooter or wheelchair?
     Every case will be assessed separately. You may be held financially responsible for any damage. This is explained fully when you join as a member of the scheme.

• Does South Shields Shopmobility offer other opportunities?
     Yes, we will soon be offering a range of activities in our training room such as friendship groups, genealogy and computer courses. Please get in touch for further details.

• Once I've joined South Shields Shopmobility can I use my membership card at other Shopmobility schemes?
     No, all Shopmobility schemes operate independently, you must become a member of each scheme you wish to use.

• Do you have information about other Shopmobility schemes?
     Yes we do. Please ask at reception for further details.

• Can anyone become a member?
     Yes but please remember the required identification. Persons under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian to join on their behalf.

• Do I require a blue badge to use the Shopmobility car park?
     No, You will be given a South Shields Shopmobility car park badge when you join which must be displayed when using the car park. The car park is for use when hiring Shopmobility equipment. This badge is only for use in South Shields Shopmobility car park.

• How many miles can I go on a scooter or power chair?
     We are unable to give an exact answer to this as it varies depending on road surface e.g. hills etc. All of our equipment is kept fully charged and checked regularly. You should have no problems using the equipment during the daily hire time.
